At the beginning of the new year, January 4, 2020, to be exact, the Lady Cardinals of South Laurel faced one of the top teams in the state of Kentucky the Lady Valkyries of Sacred Heart Academy. At the end of that game, the score wasn't even close. Sacred Heart had defeated South Laurel 74-50. Fast forward to March 13, 2020, the same Lady Cardinals would face off against the Lady Valkyries on the second day of the 59th Mingua Beef Jerky/KHSAA Girls' Sweet Sixteen at Rupp Arena. By halftime, the Lady Cardinals were down by 3 to the Lady Valkyries. By the time the 4th period was to start South Laurel was ahead 43-35, but Sacred Heart would not go away. South Laurel would have an 11-point lead and then Sacred Heart had cut that lead to only one with 1:58 left in the game. From there South Laurel was lead by Eastern Kentucky University basketball commit, Amerah Steele, and Western Kentucky University basketball commit, Ally Collett. As the final horn sounded the Lady Cardinals would walk off the court with a 1 point victory over the #1 ranked team in the state, 58-57. However, the happiness was overtaken by the sad news that the remainder of the tourney would be suspended to a later date. As it runs out due to Covid-19 the 59th Mingua Beef Jerky/KHSAA Girls' Sweet Sixteen would be canceled.
